Mini-Mario & Friends: amiibo Challenge is a treat for Nintendo fans who have been slavishly collecting their toys-to-life amiibo figures.
Technically, the game is free to download on both the Wii U and 3DS, but to play the game, you need to own at least one amiibo, and ideally, the following 10 amiibo: Bowser, Bowser Jr., Diddy Kong, Donkey Kong, Luigi, Mario, Peach, Rosalina & Luma, Toad, Yoshi. (If you’re doing the math, yes, that’s about $160 worth of amiibo.)
If you don't have any of the Mario-related amiibo, you have to play as the robot Mini Spek and are limited to much less than the over 50 levels available.
Like the previous Mini Mario games before it, amiibo Challenge is a stylus based puzzle game. To start, you tap a compatible amiibo figure, and guide your Mini character to amiibo tokens or the end goal.
Each mini in the Mario series has their own unique abilities and levels, along with remixed music and obstacles.
While we wouldn’t recommend buying amiibo just to play this game, if you do have them on hand, Mini-Mario & Friends: amiibo Challenge is a full-fledged, fun game that feels like a true reward for being an amiibo collector.
