Vampire Weekend, Vampire Weekend

Vampire WeekendVampire Weekend’s self-titled debut arrived with a significant amount of blog-band Internet exposure, but the big question is: do they live up to the hype?

The band proclaims on their website: “We are specialists in the following styles: ‘Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa,’ ‘Upper West Side Soweto,’ ‘Campus’ and ‘Oxford Comma Riddim.'” What does that mean? Anyway, the album features a line-up of witty pop with a sprinkling of world music. But don’t let that scare you off as Vampire Weekend also features smart, (borderline-snooty) highbrow lyricism matched with catchy guitar riffs — and not a single weak track in the bunch.

They live up to the hype and then some.
