The New Pornographers, Twin Cinema

In case you’ve missed the news, Canadian music is hot right now. Along side bands like The Arcade Fire, Metric, Death From Above 1979, and Broken Social Scene – The New Pornographers (made up of lead vocalist A.C. Newman, alt-country songstress Neko Case, guitarist Dan Bejar, and rounded out by bassist John Collins and drummer Kurt Dahle) are set to dominate internationally with their special brand of smart power pop. With their third release, Twin Cinema , The New Pornographers continue with the same kind of memorable retro pop hooks and lush sonic attacks. The only difference is that Newman has taken charge of the faster rock tracks, while Case has taken a back seat to some of the slower ballads, which isn’t a bad idea considering the power and intensity her voice can evoke. While all 14 tracks are gems, my highlights include: the opening title track, the slow starter but epic “The Bleeding Heart Show,” “These Are The Fables” (which starts off with an acoustic guitar and ends in a jangled mix of piano and drums), the ode to recording “Sing Me Spanish Techno,” and the hypnotizing chorus of “Falling Through Your Clothes.” I could go on, but Twin Cinema is meant to be heard blazing off your car speakers as you skip work for a long weekend.
