The Besnard Lakes, The Besnard Lakes are the Dark Horse

The Besnard Lakes, fronted by husband-and-wife duo Jace Lake and Olga Goreas, are probably one of those indie rock bands that will blow your mind live, but on their debut The Besnard Lakes are the Dark Horse, they sound redundant. All eight tracks are full of droning mid-tempo song structures with the same slow build up to a grandiose finish. Dark Horse mostly falls flat, as even rock epics like “And You Lied To Me,” “Because Tonight” and “On Bedford and Grand” end with no big payoff for the listener. Despite my displeasure for the Besnard Lakes’ adaptation of ’70s space rock, the production is beautifully layered with violin and brass elements, subtle keyboard phrases, and an ubiquitous reverb effect on all vocals. It’s just too bad that you’ll forget Dark Horse as soon as you hit stop. (Jagjaguwar)
