Black Mountain, Black Mountain

Mix Velvet Underground, Black Sabbath, with the better parts of Queen Of The Stone Age, add a pinch of Pink Floyd and what you get are the infectious grooves of Vancouver’s Black Mountain. From the drugged-out sax attack on opener “Modern Music” to the melodic rock of “No Satisfaction,” BM easily fluctuates between heavy stoner-style rock (“Druganaut,”“Don’t Run Our Hearts Around”) to weary road-warrior mantras (“Heart Of Snow,” “Faulty Times”). One thing about BM that could scare some listeners off is that they require some patience to get into. But those who attempt the climb will, in the end, be greatly rewarded with an absolutely mesmerizing, space-out record. (Scratch Records)
