Badly Drawn Boy, One Plus One is One

BDB’s latest begins with the lines “Back to being who I was before” and as cheesy as it sounds, it’s nice to have him back. After his Mercury Prize winning debut, The Hour of the Bewilderbeast, BDB went on to release two musically bombastic records — About a Boy and Have You Fed the Fish? Both releases had BDB’s style of layered sounds, but were so polished that it left one wondering whether he had forgotten his roots. One Plus One is One returns BDB to his classic laid-back pop sound with heartened lyrics. The first single “Year Of The Rat” and “Holy Grail” best captures BDB’s charming and bold melodies by using a children’s choir to convey the sweetness of love. Strewn throughout the record are some full out rockers like “Summertime In Wintertime” and “Logic Of A Friend”, but One Plus One is One biggest impacts are found in the gentler acoustic songs.
