Alex Lloyd, Distant Light

Australian singer-songwriter Alex Lloyd’s third release, Distant Light, is a standard collection of warm pop songs that seem to deal with two major themes: travelling and heartache. Instant highlights include the Travis influenced “Far Away,” radio rocker “1000 Miles,” and the sweet love song “Beautiful.” But mid-way through Distant Light, you get the feeling that Lloyd had taken the mantra “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” a little too close to heart, since all thirteen soft rock tracks all use the same occasional organ, strings, or slide guitar. Unfortunately, the album’s overall impression is that of one long pop ballad. In the end, because of Lloyd’s lofty ambitions — or lack of — Distant Light is hard to stomach in one sitting.
