Unlikely shows make a big splash

Thanks to the (now resolved) writers strike, and a lack of new episodes for established hits like Grey's Anatomy and CSI, unlikely mid-season replacement programs have been bought up to fill the schedule.

CTV imported the first season of Showtime's edgy serial killer drama Dexter (#16) and scored with over 1.1 million viewers.

Over at Global, summer reality series Big Brother (#22, 28, 30) was rushed to the winter and drew almost a million viewers each night it aired.

Not everything has been clicking though — Global's purchase of HBO's polygamy drama Big Love is a flop on Thursday nights — failing to crack the top 30.
