‘The Boss Baby’ tops weekend box office with $49m

It was a close race, but The Boss Baby bested Beauty and the Beast to take the North American box office crown, grossing an estimated $49 million over the weekend.

The DreamWorks-Fox animated production features Alec Baldwin as the titular Boss Baby’s voice, whose lead character has drawn comparisons to an infantile version of the current U.S. Commander-in-chief.

In second place, Disney’s live-action Beauty and the Beast remake took in $47.5 million, bringing its domestic box office total to $395 million.

Disappointing in third place was the Scarlett Johansson sci-fi actioner Ghost in the Shell, which pulled in $19 million on a $110 million production budget.

Also opening this week, war drama The Zookeeper’s Wife opened in tenth place, earning $3.3 million.

All box office figures are estimates in U.S. dollars and are provided by film studios. Generally speaking, studios earn about 55 per cent of a film’s gross.
