Apple Music previews original series Carpool Karaoke and Planet of the Apps

Two of Apple Music’s highly-anticipated original video series — Carpool Karaoke: The Series and the Dragons’ Den-style Planet of the Apps — dropped extended previews ahead of their spring launch dates.

Apple has been on a spending spree lately, scooping up rights to original entertainment programming to differentiate itself from rivals Spotify, Pandora and Google Music.

Under the leadership of veteran entertainment executive Jimmy Iovine, the company’s investment in Apple Music is also seen as future-proofing against slowing hardware sales.

In January, Iovine hinted in The Hollywood Reporter that Netflix should also be worried about Apple’s streaming content expansion. “If South Park walks into my office, I am not going to say you’re not musicians,” he said. “We’re going to do whatever hits popular culture smack on the nose.”

Carpool Karaoke: The Series

Based on the segment that has become a global, viral video sensation on The Late Late Show with James Corden, Carpool Karaoke features 16 celebrity pairings riding along in a car together as they sing tunes from their personal playlists and surprise fans who don’t expect to see big stars belting out tunes one lane over.

While Corden is featured in a ride with Will Smith, he steps on aside as other celebs take the wheel including Billy Eichner and Metallica, Alicia Keys and John Legend, Ariana Grande and Seth MacFarlane, Chelsea Handler and Blake Shelton, Michael Strahan and Jeff Gordon, John Cena and Shaquille O’Neal, and many more.

Planet of the Apps

Planet of the Apps is a venture series centred around the world of apps. Hosted by Zane Lowe and featuring advisers Jessica Alba, Gwyneth Paltrow, Gary Vaynerchuk and, the series highlights app developers and their products. Successful pitches are featured on Apple’s app store.
