“You know why I’m here,” says Benedict Cumberbatch’s titular character in Sherlock‘s new series 4 trailer.

A dark, foreboding tone permeates the teaser, which also features this series’ villain, played by actor Toby Jones.

“What’s the very worst thing you can do to your very best friends?” Jones asks in a scene. “Tell them your darkest secret.”

Will the fourth series of Sherlock be its last? With its lead now an international star, Cumberbatch hinted in a recent interview with GQ that this might be the case.

“It might be the end of an era,” he told GQ. “It feels like the end of an era, to be honest. It goes to a place where it will be pretty hard to follow on immediately.”

The fourth series of Sherlock premieres on Jan. 1, 2017.
