CBC Newsworld host Marivel Taruc is obviously a morning person. Every weekday for the past four years, Taruc has been up at 4 a.m. (and sometimes earlier) to get ready for her business reports on CBC News: Morning.

This season, Taruc is taking centre stage for her own broadcast and condensing her early morning duties to the weekend as the host of CBC News: Morning Weekend Edition.

“Yes, mornings do take their toll on you, but now it’s just Saturday and Sunday for two hours,” Taruc says with a laugh. “Best of all, when I’m not on the air, I’m out in the field. It’s great.”

Taruc started her career with the CBC as a general assignment reporter in her hometown of Winnipeg. After seven years with the city’s local newscast, 24 Hours, Taruc joined Newsworld’s Business team in 2000.

“I went into business journalism because it was popular at the time, but I had no business background, so I took the Canadian Securities Course and learned some of the tricks of the trade.”

But now Taruc will leave the business beat behind to focus on her first love: news.

“It’s like getting back to my roots,” she says. “It’s a nice change to do interviews with people other than CEOs.”

CBC News: Morning Weekend Edition airs weekends from 7 to 9 a.m. ET.
