1535

French explorer Jacques Cartier and his crew celebrated the first Christmas in Canada at Stadacona, Quebec.

1641

Canada’s oldest Christmas song, “Jesus, He is Born (The Huron Carol),” was composed by Rev. Jean de Brebeuf with the lyrics written in the native language of the Huron/Wendat peoples.

1850

Canada’s first woman poet of distinction, Isabella Valancy Crawford was born in Ireland. Crawford later immigrated to Toronto and her poems, short stories and serialized novels appeared in publications across North America. She is considered one of the first Canadians to earn a living as a freelance writer.

1939

King George VI’s Christmas message is broadcast in Canada by the CBC. King George VI revived the annual Christmas message to boost spirits as the British Empire was facing another world war. The Christmas message is continued today by Queen Elizabeth II.

1971

Justin Trudeau was born — and was only the second child to be born to a Canadian prime minister while in office.

1973

Sacha (Alexandre) Trudeau was born.

1996

Toronto Maple Leafs play-by-play announcer Bill Hewitt died at age 68.

2010

Ottawa-born singer-songwriter Alanis Morissette gave birth to her first child, son Ever Imre.

Scarborough, Ontario-born David Furnish and husband Elton John became parents to son Zachary Jackson Levon Furnish-John via a surrogate.
